Dinosaur Ridge

Going Back in Time 300 Million Years

By Renee Bowman August 16, 2019

As we left Leadville, we drove through Denver, and stopped at Dinosaur Ridge, just outside of Denver. Dinosaur Ridge is a National Natural Monument, and is completely non-profit. This was a wonderful stop. The Trek Through Time Exhibit hall was neat, and offered some great hands-on discovery and play for the kids. They got to dig for their own "fossils" in the sandbox. This was fun, but was nothing compared to the tour. We took a guided shuttle bus tour up Dinosaur Ridge. We were delayed a bit to the rain, but the staff was so kind and knowledgeable, and putting the safety of everyone first! Once the lightening moved far enough out of the area, we went on our tour. The tour guide had so much wonderful information, and we were able to see so many great fossils and tracks. There are more than 300 amazing dinosaur tracks on Dinosaur Ridge, making it a favorite by paleontologists. Within these tracks, we have learned that dinosaurs were mothering, as it was here where they first saw mother dinosaur tracks with baby tracks right next to it. Dinosaur Ridge is also where they first discovered the Stegosaurus! You can see how the area used to be a shore by the rippling of the sandstone. It is all so informative and amazing, and located right next to the beautiful Red Rock Amphitheater! If you are visiting Colorado, this is a much see for every age!
